Summary

Ravi kicks off the show by tackling three of the week’s biggest breaking news stories: what TikTok’s future in the U.S. looks like after President Biden signed legislation that will ban or force a sale of the platform, the rationale behind the New York Court of Appeals’ decision to overturn Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 sex crimes conviction, and what to know about the pro-Palestine protests that have erupted on college campuses across the country. Ravi then welcomes Keri Rodrigues, co-founder and founding president of the National Parents Union and co-host of The National Parents Union Podcast. Keri and Ravi discuss the impact of Moms for Liberty, what Gen Z’s future looks like, and why there’s so much debate around whether students should be allowed to have their phones with them during school. Welcome to the Lost Debata show for Politically Ecclectics. I'm Ravi Gupta. And there are a few big updates today. I'm going to start at the top of the show here. One is Biden just signed the so-called TikTok ban, which may or may not be a ban. Essentially, what happens now is ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok has up to a year to find an approved buyer.

0:23.3

They actually have nine months, and then there's the possibility of a three-month extension.

0:28.2

If they fail to find an American-based buyer or a non-Chinese buyer, they will be banned

0:33.5

from the United States app stores.

0:37.0

TikTok's CEO has said he will challenge that law on First

0:41.5

Amendment grounds. So that's a huge deal. I think this is really the first major so-called

0:47.0

internet regulation. I mean, if we want to call it a regulation, it really has less to do with

0:51.2

subject matter or general scope, but has more to do specifically

0:55.9

with this one company. We've done a few episodes on this, and so we'll put those in the show

1:00.8

notes. Also, this kind of came out of nowhere. Harvey Weinstein's conviction was just overturned

1:07.1

just a few hours ago. There was a really interesting piece in the New York Times from

1:10.9

Jody Cantor who wrote, she said, and broke a lot of the Weinstein stories out there. And she said

1:19.2

that the case against Weinstein has been fragile since the day it was filed. Prosecutors moved

1:26.0

forward with risky boundary-pushing bets.

1:30.1

And Cantor notes that although there were nearly 100 women who came forward in the press,

1:35.8

including with Cantor and others, to share their stories of Weinstein,

1:39.3

the case itself only centered on two victims who the charges related to, and both of those

1:46.4

victims had admitted to having consensual sex with Weinstein at times other than the,

1:53.6

obviously the criminal acts. And what Cantor notes is that that created an issue for this trial,

1:59.8

that the prosecutors really tried to introduce

2:03.2

more evidence than it's typical in a trial, and particularly what they tried to do,

2:07.3

where they used these what are called Molinow witnesses, which are people who give their accounts
