Summary

I try not to wrestle too much with political topics on the show, but there have been a number of men—many of them former military—who asked me to at least say something about the US withdrawal from Afghanistan and the extreme range of reactions to what happened. So here is what came up. If you (or someone you know) served, is struggling, and needs support, please DM me @mantalks on Instagram. Did you enjoy the podcast? So over the last few weeks, specifically over the last few days, I've had a number of men

0:05.5

reach out to me that have been former military Navy SEALs that have served within Afghanistan.

0:12.5

Some men really needing support, trying to make sense of what's happening in this withdrawal,

0:18.8

and trying to make sense of the time and effort and energy and life that they

0:24.9

gave to this cause to this to this war in Afghanistan over the past two decades so i've been getting

0:31.6

quite a few questions on you know can you speak to this what i'm going through what do we need to know

0:36.9

about and for just a moment,

0:38.9

I want to come at this from a non-political perspective. I think it's important to extract some

0:47.1

insight about the real humanness of this conversation. Because I think if you turn on the news, you know,

0:55.1

whether it's CNN or Fox News or MSNBC or, you know, you read a Wall Street Journal article

1:00.9

or New York Times or wherever you're picking up your news, for the most part, it's just being

1:06.3

turned into this political debauchery, right, about Trump and Biden and, you know, how the presidents

1:11.3

have handled this. And what it misses out on are, as per usual, the real human beings who

1:19.4

were there and their experience and why they served. And after two decades and something like two trillion dollars that America spent and,

1:31.7

you know, nearly 2,500 lives lost, it's interesting to see some people's response on social media.

1:38.8

You know, I saw somebody's post the other day. It was something like, you know, more lives

1:43.1

have been lost in Florida to COVID

1:45.3

than were lost in Afghanistan over, over the war. And that kind of nonsense is unhelpful. You know,

1:54.6

that kind of commentary is divisive and it serves to segregate. And it's so interesting to me that when these things

2:05.4

happen within our society and culture, right, we go to war, whatever the reason is, you know,

2:10.9

we experience a pandemic. There's mandatory, whatever, mask wearing vaccines, etc.

2:17.0

That people lose the capacity for neutrality.
