Before we begin, I'm interested in, Father said many of you are interested in the theology of the body.

having any previous experience of the theology of all? Okay. That's pretty much what I expected.

So, which is great. So I can introduce you to this a little bit this evening.

Briefly, simply to say that the theology of the body is comprised of a series of Wednesday audiences.

The Pope has a general audience every Wednesday, Pope Francis continues this tradition, in which he speaks for about 20 minutes or so

on a topic. And Pope Francis, as did Pope Benedict, and before him St. John Paul II,

tend to string together those audiences to form cohesive teachings on various things. St. John Paul II did that every Wednesday,

beginning September 5th, 1979 for five years, all on this topic. And those audiences

were strung together and eventually became known as the theology of the body.

It was really St. John Paul II's mature understanding of human sexuality and human anthropology,

something that he had been working on for many years as a young priest and then as the Archbishop of Krakoff before he was elected Pope.

The theology of the body came as a sort of, he intended the theology of the body to be a sort of robust defense

of Pope St. Paul the 6th is 1968 encyclical Humane Vite. If you don't know what Humanevete was, this was the landmark

encyclical that created a lot of dissent and division in the church in which Paul

the 6th defended the church's constant teaching against contraception, against contraception.

And this was a very, to call it a hot button issue at the time,
