Summary

Religious scholar, psychotherapist and former monk Thomas Moore has dedicated his life to exploring the questions at the heart of theology. Thomas' classic 1992 book, "Care of the Soul," redefined spirituality in the modern age, and now he believes we are facing an exhilarating new phase of our spiritual evolution. Thomas and Oprah talk about ways to bring the soul and spirituality back into your life. While discussing his book "A Religion of One's Own," he explains the difference between the part of us that searches for more and the part of us that finds solace in what we have. His broad message resonates with those who see themselves as spiritual but not necessarily religious. Thomas’ latest book is called “Ageless Soul: An Uplifting Meditation on the Art of Growing Older” in which he describes how to live agelessly, embrace our time in life and find the endless joy nestled inside our soul.

Thomas Moore has been a lifelong spiritual seeker and teacher. He spent 13 years as a Catholic

of the Soul. Thomas Moore has now written 16 books after decades of intense religious

study. He has come to believe that each of us can craft our own religion, one that connects

us to our unique spiritual core. We do that, he says, not by abandoning traditional religion,

but by opening ourselves up to all faiths and traditions.

I'm so excited about this book, A Religion of One's Own, and what's shocking to me about it

1:13.6

is that you spent so much time studying religion and being a part of organized religion and

1:22.3

religious practices and that now you write a book called A Religion of One's Own. What does

1:27.6

that really mean? Before everybody starts criticizing, let's hear what it really means.

1:32.3

Thomas Moore So what I mean by religion, religion of one's own, could be for someone who is part

1:37.8

of a religion to stop being passive and just taking what comes and be active and take the initiative

1:47.3

and make this thing your own and bring other pieces into the picture. So today, I think one of

1:53.4

the biggest things is that you can be a member of a church, let's say, and you can take wisdom

2:01.3

and insight and inspiration from any other spiritual tradition. And that's perfectly not only

2:07.6

okay, but it's something I think today we ought to be doing. What I want to make clear is,

2:12.0

and what I got from reading A Religion of One's Own is whether you are in an organized religion
