Do you remember Brexit?

Before COVID-19 spread havoc around the world, the issue that consumed Britain was its divorce from Europe and the consequences of that split.

Tonight we are leaving the European Union.

For many people this is an astonishing moment of hope.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson had campaigned for Brexit and triumphantly led the country out of the Union on January 31st.

This is the moment when the dawn breaks and the curtain goes up on a new act in our great national drama.

He was more right than he could have known, but COVID-19 isn't the only thing shaping Britain's future.

The country still has to negotiate a new relationship with the EU.

Things are still tense. That was made clear at the Think Tank, the Institute for Government last Friday, by Stefan DeRink, who advises Europe's Chief Brexit Negotiator, Michel Barney.

I think UK has always been combative in these negotiations from the very start, so during the withdrawal phase as well.

Meanwhile, David Frost, Britain's Chief Brexit Negotiator, insisted last week in Parliament that the new relationship will be in place by the end of the year.

The firm policy of the government, that we will not extend the chance of the compared and if asked, we would not agree to it.

Negotiations have begun again and they are not going well.
