Late one evening recently, the faint hum of overhead fluorescent lights and the

shuffling of papers was all that broke the silence over at the FBI office in

Portland, Oregon. Then an unexpected visitor entered. It was 68-year-old John

Irmer. His face was lined with age and his eyes heavy having hidden the deep

and haunting secret that was about to be revealed. Back in the autumn of 1979 the

city of Boston was caught up in the festive spirit of Halloween. The streets

of Back Bay echoed with children trick-or-treating, but amidst the celebratory

atmosphere, a sinister event would transpire that would remain unsolved

for nearly half a century. On Halloween, Susan Marcia Rose, a lively 24-year-old

decided to spend her evening at a skating rink in the heart of the city. A

decision that would lead her down a path from which she would never return.
