Are you ready? It's from the book The Wisdom of the Desert by Thomas

Merton. He tells the story of a fourth century monk who was ordered to give money, was ordered by his Abbot to give money to

whoever insulted him. Now that's some real monk work, right? It's like I have to love

you no matter what you do to me.

Truly, like think about how evolved a person like that is.

But this fourth century monk was ordered by his abbot

to give money to whoever insulted him.

And after faithfully doing this for three whole years,

oh my gosh, can you imagine?

The monk was then instructed to travel to Athens to finally

further his studies this is what Merton, the author, said.

The disciple was entering Athens when he met a certain man who sat at the gate insulting everybody who came and went.

He also insulted the disciple who immediately burst out laughing.

Why'd you laugh when I insult you? said the man.

Because, said the monk, for three years I've been paying for this kind of thing and now you give it to me for nothing.

Enter the city, said the man. it's all yours.
