I've given you just a little bit of space. I'm not even sure you're interested in this portion of it.

But I want to tell you a couple of reasons why there are theologians that

think this has got to be the unregenerate man. This has got to be a lost man. This has got to

be Paul looking back and talking from his past before he was saved. One reason, and again,

I don't have in your notes, so just listen up. If you want to jot any part of it down,

you can do that

on the back or in any space you've got in the margin paul seems to be talking about a person under

the power of sin and he has gone to tremendous lengths in romans chapter six first portions of

romans chapter seven and man is he going to hit it in romans chapter

eight to tell us we as people who have the living christ inside of us are not under the power of sin

we've been freed from that so that's a huge issue that's a huge issue here all right also the tone of

this sounds like a man that does not have the aid

of the Holy Spirit. That's a little troubling. Another, I want you to listen to this quote from

the NIC&T. It says this, while Paul makes clear that believers will continue to struggle with sin,

what is depicted in 714 through 25 is not just a struggle with sin, but a defeat by sin.

This part I really struggle with before I determine which direction I was going to go because

this bothers me too.

This is a more negative view of the Christian life than can be accommodated within Paul's

theology.

In other words, this stands out by itself in this kind of tone among his writings.

Now, not that a believer can struggle with sin, we're going to see that in a moment.
