Welcome to the Daily Dad podcast, where we provide one lesson every single day to help you with your most important job, being a parent.

0:14.8

I'm Ryan Holiday, and I draw these lessons from ancient philosophy, modern psychology, practical wisdom, and insights from

0:23.4

parents just like you all over the world. Thank you for listening, and we hope this helps.

0:31.8

This is you trying? You just chose a text message over your kids. You wasted time last night and stayed up

0:39.7

later than you should have, and now you're exhausted and grouch you with them in the morning.

0:43.8

You hassled them over something that doesn't matter, just like your parents did, even though you

0:48.3

hated that and swore you wouldn't do it with your own kids. Look, parenting is hard and we're all trying our best,

0:57.1

or so we'd like to think. But are we? This is you trying? The person who just yelled in the car

1:04.5

for no reason? The person who totally forgot to sign the permission slip for the field trip?

1:09.2

The person who said in a minute but never

1:11.1

came back, come on, you can do better, you have to do better. We can try harder. We can

1:19.7

recommit. We can put the phone down, go to bed earlier, apologize when we blow it. It's actually

1:26.7

something I was just writing about it every night I do,

1:29.6

the Daily Dad Journal, which has been great. Like all the stuff we make, I try to make for myself

1:34.6

first and foremost. And I've been doing these one line of day journals now for 10 years.

1:39.7

You write one thing a day on the same page for five years. We made a parenting version. It's got like questions like this. Like, is this really what trying looks like? Or how could I do better? Or what's something I can give them? Or what's something I want to stop doing? Anyway, just meditating on these questions over and over and over again. It's been really great. It's just doing it last night. I'm really proud of this thing. If you want to check out the Daily Dad Five-year Reflection Journal, I'll link to that in today's show notes. It's been amazing. People have been sending in their pictures of them and stuff. I think it'll help you parent differently. It'll help you see yourself as a parent differently. It's really great. I'll link to that in today's show notes, and let's all try to get a little better.
