What happens if you’re no longer allowed to say that sugar is harmful? The new Florida agriculture bill could silence health critics and restrict discussion about food and pesticide health risks. This is a big deal!

A new bill is being proposed to control who is allowed to speak about agriculture. This bill uses defamation as a weapon and essentially bans freedom of speech about the health effects of certain foods.
Florida already has a law allowing farmers to sue someone who spreads false information about food. These discussions are referred to as "food libel" or "food disparagement."
Investigative journalists have uncovered internal documents from large agricultural and chemical companies that have shown the real goal of the food disparagement law. It’s not about protecting the farmers; it’s about silencing health critics.
This bill aims to silence environmental groups, journalists, activists, and scientists by making lawsuits so expensive and daunting that critics will simply give up. The term for this approach is called “chilling free speech."
The old law applied only to perishable foods, while the new bill removes that classification. This expands the law to all agricultural products, including sugar. What’s even worse, this law includes any agricultural practices used in production. This means the criticism of pesticides, insecticides, fungicides, fertilizers, chemical runoff, water contamination, and more can all be treated as disparagement.
It’s well known that sugar causes insulin resistance, fatty liver, chronic inflammation, type 2 diabetes, and more. The connection between sugar and chronic disease is not a rumor. If this bill is passed and someone speaks out about sugar or pesticides, even if it's true, they could be sued!
Although this bill is coming out of Florida, it's important regardless of where you live because Florida crops are sold nationwide! Legal experts warn that this could open the door to lawsuits that go way beyond the state. We do not need more legal protection for powerful industries or increased corporate control of food.
Think about what ultra-processed food companies can get away with if this bill is passed! If you believe ultra-processed foods are at the root of over 80% of chronic disease, please sign this petition. If you live in Florida, call your representative and complain!
