Summary

You may know you “should” keep the Sabbath. And perhaps you then get stuck on “how”. Hopefully this episode will remove the shameful burden of “should” and shift the question from “how” to “who”. Shelly Miller, author of Rhythms of Rest, joins me in helping you develop a rhythm to cease from work and celebrate true rest in Jesus.

But what does sabbath rest look like specifically for young moms and those in ministry? Listen in as Shelly talks through the difference between routines and rhythms, and Jesus’ call to embrace what is easy and light.

What we chat about:
  • What does it mean to practice sabbath in 2017?
  • Separating the sabbath from rules and regulations, and embracing what is “easy and light.”
  • The way we rest is unique to who we are, and may be different from how even our family members find rest.
  • Prioritizing rest as a family and coming up with a plan for how each family member can practice sabbath.
  • The main goal isn’t a set amount of time or even a day, but setting apart time time to rest
  • Discovering the difference between routines and rhythms.
  • How planning and preparation impact our ability to rest.
  • Advice for the mom whose family is uninterested in implementing the sabbath.
  • Finding like-minded community in Shelly’s Sabbath Society.

So when God created a day of rest when he was creating the world, it was the first time

0:34.7

he called something holy.

0:37.7

And I think often we have time off, we don't really think about time off to rest as being

0:45.6

holy, but I also think we also get that word holy wrong.

0:50.1

Holy really just means this, it means that apart.

0:54.4

And so what I've discovered is that Sabbath is time set apart that looks different than

1:01.6

any other time in our week.

1:04.4

And so instead of it being another who could jump through or venture rules to follow or

1:11.1

break, I'm approaching Sabbath with a mindset that I'm creating time to focus on my relationship

1:20.3

with Jesus in a way that is different.

1:22.9

So quite a time, we're going to church on Sunday.

1:27.4

It's time set apart that becomes holy and sacred because we're intentional about it.

1:34.1

Being a part of the church and faith community, there's a lot of words we throw around and

1:38.1

phrases and they often can carry a lot of baggage or feelings and experiences that differ.

1:45.4

I think sunny schools, one of those phrases, Sabbath is definitely one of them.

1:50.6

I bring it up in friends cringe and say, oh, something I know I should do, but I don't

1:55.1

know how I don't know how to make time to Sabbath.

1:57.9

Does it mean I don't do anything all day?
