a story. Maria Shaw was declared dead in the emergency room. She was incident incidentally, also dead yesterday. And the day before

that, in Anika's bed, Maria had been consistently dead since the beginning of their love four years ago,

and today was no different than the first night they kissed. Anika was feeling sick. The lights of the

ambulance had partly left her blind. Red, blue explosions had semi-permanently burned into her lenses. But the worst part of a sudden emergency was the chart of emotional reactions. They were distributed between a million different categories, all at so many conflicting wavelengths, that the combined sum total of their output was a flat line.

Baby?

Maria whispered.
