Summary

This week on the show, Spencer takes the study of wisdom to the very foundations of the world, where existence came into being and human consciousness came online. This is the virtue of the soul that allows us to understand what we are, and why we're more than just accidents. It's trippy--so buckle up--but it's also the realest thing there is.

what we're really doing is thinking of different ways to look at the whole person,

0:50.9

everything that we are. There are obviously different experiences that we have that we can categorize and there is a self-awareness that enables us to speak to ourselves because as we were talking about last week when we got to wisdom

1:06.7

the parts of you aren't just sort of loose dissociated moment by moment you have this, then you have that experience, they're actually bound together by something very mysterious, which I referred to as the eagle and the watcher.

1:21.0

But you can use any number of words, if that's too kooky, you can use any number of words if that's too kooky you can use any number of words to talk about this thing you could call it self-awareness

1:28.8

you could call it consciousness and I said before that consciousness is a word that comes from the Latin

1:34.8

conscientia meaning knowledge alongside con in Latin means with scientia means

1:40.9

with scientia means, and so if you know that you are having a certain

1:47.4

feeling, that means there's something in you besides what's having the feeling.

1:52.0

If you think, oh, I'm hungry right now that's not the part of you that is feeling the hunger

1:56.9

That's the part of you that is standing alongside the hunger feeling part and observing and as we've been building our way up through the soul

2:05.3

we've finally gotten to that part of you which is really the ruling part it's the part that can recognize reason, but it's also even deeper than what we typically think of as, you know, intelligence or argumentation.

2:20.0

It's the ground of our being. It's what binds us together and makes us into one coherent entity.
