Take a look at this chimney.

This is something known as a candlestick.

As you might imagine, coal mines need ventilation, and so at almost every coal mine

built at the time, you'll find one of these chimneys built above ground. It's not at all unusual to see one of these.

With that said, though, this candlestick and the mine below it are unusual, but for a different reason.

Instead of this candlestick being at the end of the mine, stopping short of the Irish Sea, it's more like the beginning.

There was a tunnel known as the main road that would eventually stretch six miles beneath

the seabed above, and this main road was the only way in and the only way out for the hundreds

of men who worked here.

It's almost unbelievable that it even exists in the first place, but like the infamous

Levant Mine disaster, the tragedy here was almost worse than if the tunnel had simply flooded.

This is the horrifying story of the Wellington the channel, and especially the Levant

Mind Disaster, which you may remember as the mine disaster under the ocean, I almost couldn't

believe that mines were constructed under bodies of water, let alone the ocean itself.

It just seemed like an insane thing to do, especially given the time period a lot of this was going

on. Sure, you can see how a tunnel might be constructed underwater with modern technology

and engineering, but to imagine men without electricity using gas lanterns for light creating
