The Plattei Reservoir in southern Belgium had long been a popular destination for divers.

When the dam was built, the water levels rose, submerging and concealing many old structures beneath its surface.

This created an eerie yet fascinating underwater landscape for divers to explore.

On the evening of January 4, 2024, two experienced divers, 46-year-old

Christoph and 59-year-old Frederick arrived at the site with their gear carefully packed in their

vehicle. Conditions that day were less than ideal, the sky was overcast, and the recent

rainfall had left the water murky, but neither man was discouraged. Both were seasoned divers

well accustomed to the

challenges of low visibility and deep dives. That night's dive was the first of the new year

and a chance to shake off the winter lull and reacquaint themselves with the quiet world beneath

the surface. To them, it was probably just another routine dive, nothing unusual, just a familiar

site they'd explored before. They had their rebreathers, dive repulsion vehicles, and years of experience, but this night would be unlike any other.

The Plattei Reservoir is actually part of a network of five interconnected reservoirs and is the largest artificial lake in Belgium.

This 865 acre expanse is surrounded by dense woodlands and rolling hills, and for divers it's always had a certain allure.

Its depth, submerged structures, and naturally low visibility made for a challenging but also very rewarding dive.

And because of this, it was a favorite training site for local dive clubs, though regulations were strict.

Diving was only permitted in a designated area managed by a local club. Outside this controlled zone, the risks increased significantly.

At the heart of the lake is the Plattey dam itself, which is a massive structure that reshaped the region's landscape when it was built in the 1970s.
