Welcome to the Daily Dad podcast where we provide one lesson every day to help you with your most important job being a dad.

0:15.2

These are lessons inspired by ancient philosophy, by practical wisdom, and insights from dads all over the world. Thank you for

0:23.5

listening, and we hope this helps. They can't see like you. For most of Theodore Roosevelt's life,

0:36.2

he had no idea. He was active. He was out in nature.

0:39.1

He read like crazy. But he had no idea that all these things were harder than they needed to be.

0:44.3

He had no idea that he was only experiencing a fraction of what they were actually like

0:49.2

until he got glasses at age 13. I had no idea how beautiful the world was, he said. I could not see,

0:57.7

and yet I was wholly ignorant that I was not seeing. Now the message of today's message is not just

1:04.2

to go get your kids' eyes checked, although it's a perfectly good idea. It's a reminder that

1:17.7

brave. And this is why we so regularly find ourselves in conflict with our children, especially as

1:23.5

they get older, because we are perceiving totally different realities. We see a fuller picture,

1:28.8

and they remain ignorant of what they do not see. So we have to be patient. We have to take time to

1:35.6

explain. We have to take a minute to check to see if there's some medical or informational reason

1:40.7

behind their behavior. We have to share our assumptions, not simply assume we are on the

1:46.2

same page. We have to help them see what we see. And this will help them understand how beautiful

1:52.6

the world is and also how dangerous it is, how important some things are, why we insist on this or that,

1:59.3

why it's not okay to do this or that, and what they may or may not

2:02.8

be missing. We know they don't, and it's our job to make sure they get a pair of glasses

2:08.8

to help them understand. Hey, thanks for listening to the Daily Dad podcast. You can get this via

2:17.2

email every day as well at
