Summary

It’s a full mailbag episode as we answer listener questions from across the country — mixing college basketball history, current storylines, and a little chaos along the way. We dive into coaching “almost took the job” stories, the future of early-season conference events, the most intriguing teams right now, and how many programs can actually win the national championship. Plus: Michigan State’s contender case, ACC tourney math, blue blood debates (hello, Florida), and Virginia’s Ryan Odom era. There’s also plenty of fun: hypothetical matchups, travel routines, airport rankings, Memphis tips for an 8-year-old, linguistic debates we probably shouldn’t have, and more. We close with the Final Four and 1, previewing Winthrop–Texas Tech, UL-Monroe–Kansas State, Saint Mary’s–LMU, Gonzaga–Pepperdine, and a sneaky San Francisco–Seattle game. Mailbag chaos, college hoops insight, and classic GP & Norlander — all in one episode.

the mailbag? I got question number one. It's all teed up. Let's go. I've got my mini driver out. Question number one is all teed up. It comes from Garrett. He's from Arkansas. He emails. He says, I love when you guys go down memory lane and tell stories from the early 2000s. I started following college hoops in 2012-ish. So my question, what are some of your favorite coaches to almost take another job story? Norlander, I'll let you go first. Well, there's a lot of, this was, I love the thought-provoking ones. This was a very thought-provoking. I've got a number of candidates here. I'm going to mention a few biggies. Coach Kay seriously considering taking the Lakers job in 2004, like folks listening to this podcast that just got into college hoops two years ago, four years ago, even eight years ago, you might not be totally aware of that, but it was a major, major deal. Think about where Kobe Bryant was in his career. He didn't take the job. And I do wonder if he had Johnny Dawkins almost definitely gets that job. Kay is not considered arguably the greatest college basketball coach ever if he goes to Los Angeles and does a good job. He might be considered the best basketball coach if he was amazing there. But it's a very interesting what if Dawkins would have taken the Duke job. Is Duke now what it would have been had he taken the job?
