Let's begin by casting back to the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham this week.

It was an interesting affair, certainly the most vibrant gathering that I've attended, with

plenty of fresh new faces, it had the feel of a revivalist meeting, but in her

keynote address on Wednesday, Theresa may signal that she would be taking the

party in a new direction and quite a radical one, swinging like a deranged

pendulum from left to right. The Conservatives are going to be tough on immigration

but welcome state intervention.
