We're dipping your toes outside of the typical content that we cover.

We're joined by Dr. Carter J. Carter, a dedicated psychotherapist, clinical social worker, and academic

who's invested decades into the understanding of the psychological impacts of trauma, discrimination,

and structural injustices.

As a listener and a farmer and a person on the left, Dr. Carter has a really unique insight

into some of the struggles and some of the conversations that we see very often around the

role of therapy and community and identity and how we address these under the current

economic system. So in this conversation,

we talked about the idea of psychotherapy and these ideas of developing long-term solutions and

ideas that can last despite some of the challenges that we face on the left under contemporary

capitalism. You can find Dr. Carter teaching and advising at the Mass College of Liberal

Arts. Now, given their background and their interests, this is a really unique conversation.

We talk about farming and all these really messy subjects around cancel culture and identity,

and how do we create a better world by looking inward

and at how we organize on the left.

Carter, thanks so much for joining us.

Tell us a little bit about your background and I guess how you ended up here.

Well, probably the most important part of my background is that I'm a poor Pearls

Almanac superfan and longtime listener who's fan theming out about being here. I can hardly believe it. For the listener, by the way, the individual who hosts this, he has a face and everything. You can't believe it, but he really does not just auditory. So I'm a shrink. I'm a psychology professor. I work on psychoanalysis and agrarian studies and queer theory and anarchism and all sorts of things in those general areas. And I've been a practicing therapist for 15 almost years approaching. This is the kind of work that I've devoted my life to and there's a lot of

problems with it. I think the concept for today is talking about good, bad, and ugly.
