Welcome back all history fans to the Giants of History Podcast!

In our third episode of the Theodore Roosevelt series, Roosevelt returns from the Badlands and runs his first major campaign for Mayor of New York. His writing career also takes off giving him an element of celebrity in the US and abroad. He then focuses his energies on hunting down and ending corruption, first in Washington as a Civil Service Commissioner, then in New York as Police Commissioner.

After the first three, intense and wonderful months in his new role as a Federal Civil Service Commissioner,

Roosevelt took a break and decided to head west again.

This time it would be to the Montana wilderness, where he planned to clear his mind, recharge his spirit, and get some much needed exercise.

It had been noticed in his new job that the traveling, eating, and soft living, as he phrased it, was putting pounds on his body and he needed to get back into fighting form.

It was on this particular trip west that Roosevelt came as close as he would ever come to being

killed by the game he was there to hunt.

He was alone on the trip, as was much his preference.

And one late afternoon, as the day's hunt was at an end and the sun was starting to get low, he made his

camp amidst the trees near a brook.

He then walked off in search of some small game that would provide his dinner.

As he came upon a clearing, he saw a giant grizzly bear in the valley below, about 60 yards

off. Roosevelt shot from where he stood and hit the bear in its side.

The bear reared onto its hind legs showing its full size and roaring in pain from the

wound. The bear then ran off into the thicket and disappeared.

Roosevelt pursued in an effort to finish the job. As he crept through the bushes in search of the

bear, he could hear a painful groan echoing off the trees around him.

Suddenly the leaves in front of him parted and he was face to face with the roaring
