On Friday, August 1st, 1969, three letters were received, one at the Vallejo Times

Harold, one to the San Francisco Chronicle, and one to the San Francisco Examiner.

The nearly identical letters took credit for the shootings at Lake Herman Road and Blue

Rock Springs.

Each letter also included one third of what is referred to as the Zodiac 408 Cipher.

It is called this because the author used 408 different symbols in the cryptogram, which

the killer claimed that when solved, you'll have my name.

So the cryptogram is to contain his identity.

The author demanded that the letters and the cipher be printed on each paper's front

page.

Let's go through each and give a good description of everything that was received.

First the Vallejo Times.

The envelope to the Vallejo Times is addressed to Vallejo Times Harold, Vallejo Calif.

As to say California, C-A-L-I-F, please rush to editor with four stamps in the upper

right corner of the envelope, so way too much postage.

The back of the envelope says please rush to editor.

The envelope to the San Francisco Examiner is addressed to S-period F-period Examiner,

San Fran Period Calif.

Please rush to editor with two postage stamps in the upper right corner of the envelope.

The back of the envelope again says please rush to editor.

The envelope to the San Francisco Chronicle is addressed to S-period F-period Chronicle,

San Fran Period Calif.
