Brian Hartnell barely suppressed a giggle as a strange man approached him and 22 year old Cecilia Shepard on the shore of California's Lake Beriesa.

Cecilia gripped his arm tightly as the man moved closer, but Brian almost couldn't help but laugh.

The man was wearing a ridiculous black hood that looked like it came straight from a costume

shop.

It draped unevenly over his blue windbreaker.

Perhaps the oddest part of all was the prominent symbol near the bottom of the hood,

which looked like the crosshairs of a gun.

Then Brian realized why Cecilia was so frightened. The man had a shining black

pistol in his hand. In a remarkably calm voice, Cecilia asked the stranger what he wanted.

The hooded man told them he only wanted their money.

But he was lying.
