Summary

What if a mob boss had the power of the pardon? We’re finding out. It’s been quite the year to be a criminal. Not for the people labeled criminals like immigrants or trans people, but people who actually have charges, convictions even! In his first year in office of his second term, Trump has pardoned a whopping 2,000 criminals who have committed all kinds of horrible acts and are still menaces to society. We’re talking Jan 6 rioters who have abused children, killed people while driving drunk, and threatened other federal workers. Or drug dealers like former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez, who had been serving 45 years for one of the largest drug trafficking conspiracies in history.  In some form or another, every pardon Trump has issued has either allowed himself to avoid any consequences for his own crimes, been a mechanism to get rich, or a way to extort political loyalty. From pardoning his 18 fellow co-conspirators in the Georgia elections scandal from 2020, to pardoning a crypto-tycoon CZ who is now helping Eric and Don Jr.’s stablecoin, to pardoning Eric Adams in exchange for allowing ICE to run amok in New York City, there’s a sinister reason behind each one. Now, not only is Trump personally benefitting from his pardon power, but these criminals being at large puts everyone at risk. Whether it’s criminals who’ve harmed women and children, crooked CEOs who’ve defrauded investors, or big time drug dealers who have made millions off illicit drugs while individuals face time for nonviolent possession, these criminals aren’t just Trump’s criminals, but some are legit monsters. *Become a paying patron to get Francesca's exclusive behind the scenes & extra frants, now 25% off using code: HOLIDAYS* Support these deep dive episodes by becoming a patron https://www.patreon.com/bitchuationroom. We've been through a lot this year. Some of us lost our vital government job. Some of us got measles.

0:35.9

Some of us went into debt buying a week's worth of groceries,

0:38.6

and one of us went wee, we, we all the way to becoming a trillionaire. And I'm not going to tell

0:43.5

you which one of us. But let's just say the ketamine mines are humming. That is how ketamine is made,

0:50.9

okay? It is mined. Don't look it up. Not ketamine in general, of course,

0:55.2

just his ketamine, you know, like the emeralds. But if we were to write a descriptive essay

1:00.7

about this year without using chat GPT, and I am, in fact, bravely doing just that, I would

1:06.8

call this year the year of the criminal. Because all year long, we've been told that this administration is tough on crime.

1:13.6

This was a year after all where the government rolled out a job training program for failed little league coaches and bouncers with DUIs called ICE.

1:21.6

And then it went to work, disappearing immigrants, brown people, workers, veterans, moms, and dads in the most terrifying and inhumane

1:29.3

ways possible, all under the notion that they are criminals.

1:33.3

We're working to secure our borders, remove dangerous illegal aliens, stop drug and human smuggling,

and lock up these criminals as long as we can in our prisons.

1:46.8

Now let's leave aside for a moment that who gets labeled a criminal has always been racialized

in America and that we should probably stop banding about the term to describe whole swathes

of people.

1:57.2

But just looking at the facts, over 70% of those disappeared by ICE had no criminal record whatsoever,

2:04.6

almost like getting rid of crime was never really the point, which is crazy, because why would they lie?

2:11.6

Yet while the regime disappeared your local taco vendor, it also got to work pardoning real criminals at breakneck speed.

2:18.3

Trump has issued 2,000 pardons and commutations this year, which is 10 times the number of
