Before I get into what the world was like in the year 1900, I want to explain something

that's confused many listeners of this podcast. The year 1900 was the last year of the

19th century, not the first year of the 20th century.

The 20th century and the 1900s overlap by 99%.

The exception is the year 1900.

The reason why 1900 is the last year of the 19th century is that there was no year zero.

Under our calendar system, the first year of the first century was the year one, and the last year of the first century was the year 100.

As such, the last year of the 19th century was 1900, the last year of the 20th century was 2000, and the last year of the 21st century
