Summary

CW: violence & terrorism Artist & activist Jamie DeWolf returns for part two of his interview to discuss how cult mechanics have been used to manipulate spirituality across history. Bouncing off of Rachel with his knowledge of cultic groups, Jamie invites us to contemplate the origins and purpose of malignant intolerance toward outsiders. The adrenaline released when fighting a common ‘enemy’ is an effective ingredient in bonding a congregation. Hateful language generated for outsiders keeps the people inside from leaving their places as pawns. Jamie DeWolf shares the twisted history of Scientology’s formation— and predictions of its decline in the future. He opens up about how his relationship to L Ron Hubbard has shaped him as a person and performer. Before You Go: Why are narcissists usually good storytellers? It benefits them to control the narrative and create a conflict for their followers to rally against. Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

I learn so much from talking with you in the way that you phrase things.

1:25.6

And a couple thoughts. One is this idea

that they really attack former members. I know they attack a lot of people who are helping people

also who like me who are helping former members. But I think having somebody leave is such a blow to the cult leader's ego that it proves that they don't have ultimate control and they can't sustain ultimate control over that person and it's no longer working.

1:55.8

And I think that's devastating.

1:57.6

And so with a lot of people who can't handle those feelings of being devastated,

2:04.2

they will go on the offense, so they're not on the defense because they really actually have
