The We are obviously a podcast about presidential history, but it's good to take a break every now and then and focus on another aspect of history.

And this one will be more about American culture. And

culture is often a reflection of history. So today we're going to focus on a little bit of a

forgotten aspect of American culture. If you look up a list of worst movies ever, there's a chance

you might see a blurb about a movie from

1956 titled The Conqueror. And it's about Genghis Khan, the legendary Mongolian leader. And

curiously, some would say hilariously, it has John Wayne, of all actors, playing Genghis Khan. And it's a movie,

obviously, a period piece about Genghis Khan's life. And there aren't too many Mongolians or

Asians cast in this movie. So it's a great look into American culture at the time and how people perceived what would be

appropriate or not appropriate at that time as far as playing Genghis Khan and people

in his lifetime. So today, our guest is William Nunez, and he has just produced and

directed a documentary about this film.

It's titled The Conqueror, Hollywood Fallout, and it will be released by Blue Fox Entertainment.

It's going to be in theaters June 28th, and so it's going to be a fascinating window into

Hollywood and America during that time, 1956. So William, thanks for

being on our show. Hi, Richard. Great to be with you. So tell us, first of all, just a little bit

about yourself, your own personal journey. How did you become a documentarian and a filmmaker?

Well, I became a documentarian quite by accident.

I spent many years making short films, and I segued into directing live television news.

So I worked for many of the cable news companies that many people see.
