Hello everyone and welcome back to Scary Interesting.

0:04.0

In this video we're going to go over two of the absolute worst disasters in history,

0:08.3

and the final story is a disaster unlike any other you've probably heard of in a spot

0:12.8

that is also unlike any other on Earth.

0:15.8

You'll see what I mean.

0:17.4

And as always, viewer discussion is advised. Mount Ruapaiu, located in the very center of New Zealand's North Island, is about as beautiful

0:32.9

of you as you're likely to find anywhere.

0:35.4

This is even more impressive considering the seemingly endless

0:38.0

natural beauty of New Zealand, but the mountain is deceptive. Mount Ruupé is both the tallest

0:43.8

mountain on the North Island and the country's most active volcano. About every 50 years,

0:48.7

since it began to be recorded, volcanic activity increases, which can amount to as little as a

0:52.6

few tremors over a few days,

0:57.0

to as much as a catacalismic months-long event.

In early 1945, Mount Ruupaiu began ramping up for one of these eruptions as activity slowly built in March.

1:04.6

This caused several lava domes to form on its surface.

1:08.0

This is when lava comes up bubbling through vents and forms a large dome.

1:11.6

Between the three peaks that form the mountain also sits a large crater filled with water known

1:16.0

fittingly as Crater Lake. By July of that year, Crater Lake water levels had fluctuated

1:21.1

significantly and at one point drained almost completely of water to its 1,000 feet or over 300meter depth.

1:26.6

At several points, massive steam eruptions also occurred that were visible from 100 kilometers

1:31.3

away from the interaction between the water and the hot volcanic material.

1:35.3

These eruptions continued for most of the year, and by December, volcanic activity started to wane.
