Summary

Politics cast a big shadow over several big sporting events this week. The President’s immigration policies are affecting players’ and fans’ plans to travel to World Cup events in the U.S., the Administration hosts a UFC event on the White House lawn, and Trump caused disruption and was met with boos when he visited Madison Square Garden for an NBA Finals game.

We dig into the all-important senate race in Maine where Democrat Graham Platner won his party’s nomination despite a series of damaging revelations about his past.

Also, could counting votes a little faster in California and elsewhere help head off conspiracy theories about voter fraud in the future?

Hey, everybody. Welcome to left, right, and center. I'm David Green. You know, some say if you want to try and unite the world, you should use sports. But from the pitch to the octagon to the basketball court, this week's biggest sporting events were kind of competing with politics or at least very much interacting with our politics. And let's start with the globe's most watched sporting event, the World Cup.

0:27.1

Those are the very exciting opening ceremonies to kick off the games.

0:32.7

They started on Thursday.

And for the next month, 48 teams will be facing off in stadiums across the United States,

0:38.6

Canada, and Mexico. Over five million foreign spectators are expected to come to the United

0:44.6

States alone, except some have already run into some problems at the border because of President

Trump's immigration policies. And that includes several staffers of the Iranian team who are not allowed into the country.

0:56.2

Also a Somali referee, a very respected one, who was turned away by officials after landing at the international airport in Miami.

1:03.7

So is this all going to dampen the spirit of these games? And that's where we're going to start with Moalathie, who is here from the left and Sarah Isker from the right.

1:12.7

Are you all worried about this World Cup after what we've been seeing so far?

1:15.5

Referees being turned away and team officials not being allowed into our country?

1:19.6

Is this a problem?

1:20.6

Sarah?

1:21.3

What I think the number one concern for any large event like this should be is the safety and security of the players and the people

1:29.9

who are there to watch the event. And my understanding with that referee is that he basically

1:35.9

ended up on a database because of ties he had to folks affiliated with terrorist organizations

1:42.8

in his home country of Somalia. On the one hand, I think

1:46.7

it's easy to say, like, well, this is a respected referee and, you know, we should let him in anyway.

1:52.3

But again, I think it is good to err on the side of caution because these are such targets

1:57.0

for international terrorism. As far as the immigration part is concerned, again, that Somali

2:05.1

referee example was this huge example of Trump's immigration policies or something preventing

someone from coming in the country. But when the facts actually came out, it kind of sounded like
