| 0:25.4 | chapter 3 verse 20. It's conclusion, we're all guilty before a holy God, we stand condemned, |
| 0:32.4 | and there's nothing we can say in our defence, our mouths are shut, we are hopeless and we are |
| 0:38.7 | helpless. And then, although our mouths are shut and we want to look down and shame, we see |
| 0:46.7 | these glorious words of chapter 3 verse 21. But now the righteousness of God has been manifested |
| 0:53.5 | apart from the law. Incidentally you'll never feel the wonder of these words just by memorising |
| 0:59.8 | this one text. But if you meditate on chapter 1 verse 18 to chapter 3 verse 20, then you will see |
| 1:07.6 | what overwhelmingly wonderful good news these words really are. The righteousness that is lacking |
| 1:14.8 | in us has been provided by God, it's absolutely staggering. The holy God we have actually offended |
| 1:22.0 | to the point of our condemnation is the very God who delivers us from it. He now, in Jesus Christ, |
| 1:31.3 | counts as righteous through faith. And he does this without compromising his own righteousness. |
| 1:39.4 | It's absolutely staggering. This is what makes grace amazing to us. Don't you sometimes think |
| 1:46.9 | that when John Newton's amazing grace is sung so heartily by people who are really quite indifferent |
| 1:52.8 | to Jesus Christ that what they really mean is that what's amazing is that they really deep down |
| 1:59.1 | deserve it. But as long as you think that, grace will never be amazing to you. |
| 2:06.3 | The big question of course is how can God be just and at the same time justify ungodly sinners? |
| 2:14.6 | Well Paul's answer is found in Romans chapter 3 verses 21 to 24. It's often called the gospel in |
| 2:21.6 | a nutshell. In Christ's death for our sins, God's wrath is propitiated. We are justified. The |
| 2:31.2 | price of our redemption, our liberation from bondage to sin and Satan has been paid. |
| 2:38.0 | And Paul then works out in detail what this means for us in chapter 3 verse 22 to chapter 8 verse 39. |
