This is The Witches of Brinkley Elementary School.

Most of the lights in the building are turned off.

It is a weekend after all.

But one room remains brightly lit.

The detention room. And inside sit three girls, Theo,

Sarah Fina, and Nix. It's strange for Miss Eugenia to be late for detention duty.

Stickler for punctuality that she is.

No teacher is more feared than Miss Eugenia.

She's known for carrying a massive leather-bound journal with the name of every student she's ever disliked scrawled inside.

Rumor has it that once your name is in that book she'll have her evil eye on you forever.

But so far there's no sign of her.

Theo, Serafina, and Nix have been waiting for over an hour.

The wall clock ticks and the rain pours down.

Theo has short scruffy hair and she's sitting at a desk in the front row.

For a kid stuck into tension, she seems perfectly content.

I'm a little mouse, just a little mouse.

Where's my cheese? Where's my cheese?

Sarah Fina glares at Theo from her spot at the back of the room.

Can you please stop that? She snaps.

Theo spins around.
