former archons, and the city's finest living artists.

You're all adorned in luxurious clothes, pulled from wealthy villas.

Your neck is weighed down by a collection of gaudy necklaces, obviously from some

ostentatious noblewoman's powder room. Above your float is a large painting that depicts the sack

of Athens, and hanging from a long rope like a clothesline are

the vinegar-drenched bodies of the great men who were killed. One of them is your son,

Daedalus. You can't look at his shrivel body, but you feel it there. Oh, how you feel it there.

Like a cannonball blasting through your chest.

The float rumbles through the streets of Rome pulled by draft horses.

There are other floats in the triumph, each depicting a great moment in general Septimius

Caltes' reconquest of Greece.

The sack of Sparta, the raising of Delphi, the beheading of the sacred band, and leading them all, the capture of King Mithridates.
