Love is in the air, at least for your neighbourhood frogs and toads.

Across the country these charismatic amphibians are slowly emerging from their seasonal slumbers

and secretly slipping back into ponds in the hope of finding a partner.

Back on dry land, sap is rising.

Buds on trees and shrubs begin to swell as they too awakened from winter,

while beneath their branches,

the nodding flowers of dainty snowdrops and early daffodils herald longer days

and the promise of spring.

This week we'll take a closer look at one of February's new additions,

the delicate catkins ripening on bare branches.
