From slavery to segregation and discrimination to systemic racism,

there are many forces

which have stunted black wealth for generations. In fact, UNC Charlotte's

Urban Institute found home ownership rates in Mecklenburg County continue to reflect redlining practices enacted in the 1930s.

As last recorded by the US federal government, the median wealth for a white family in the United States was $171,000 and the median

wealth for a black family was just $17,000.
