We usually begin these podcasts with a biography of our guest, but today his biography is the heart of the

podcast so I'll give an abbreviated version. We are joined by Thomas Drake

a former senior executive of the National Security Agency who in 2010 was indicted on 10 felony counts,

five counts of willful retention of national defense information, which is a modification

of the Espionage Act of 1917, one count of instructing justice, and four counts of

making false statements. Charges that would have carried decades of prison time had

Drake been convicted. Instead, in early June 2011, the government dropped all the charges against Drake and agreed

not to seek any jail time in return for Drake's agreement to plead guilty to a misdemeanor

of misusing the NSA's computer system.
