Summary

One of the most mysterious and yet practically applicable of Jesus' parables is at the heart of today's Gospel. The wheat and the weeds are allowed to grow together until the harvest, just as, strangely, good and evil are allowed to exist side-by-side in the affairs of the world. Why is his true? Because God deigns to bring good out of evil.

0:49.9	When he wanted to communicate what this new reign of God was about, this kingdom, he
0:55.4	didn't engage so much in philosophical discourse.
0:59.6	But he told stories, shared images, gave them pictures.
1:05.5	What is it about parables that are so powerful?
1:07.6	Well, I think it's because symbols and images and pictures are multi-valent.
1:12.8	I mean, they have all kinds of different levels of meaning.
1:16.6	They keep generating new meanings over time.
1:20.0	If you say something very directly in straight, prosaic language, well, it tends to mean
1:24.8	one thing, but when you give a picture, you tell a story.
1:29.7	It tends to open itself up continually.
1:34.1	So this mysterious kingdom of God is likened to various things.
