Summary

This is something I'm seeing a lot on social media, but also in everyday dialogue and even some clients: labeling someone with a definitive psychological term to shut down dialogue or shame someone else, usually without really knowing what's being talked about. This only speeds up our polarization and harms our ability to connect. How about we...stop doing that? Note: the article in the NYT I mentioned was written by Dr. Tara Isabella Burton, not Bayo Akomolafe. I'll link it below, along with his interview on the Emerald Podcast. Welcome back to The Man Talk Show. I'm Connor Beaton.

0:06.5

Today we're going to be talking about the weaponization of modern psychological terms and terminology

0:13.8

and its impact on relationship, culture, society.

0:19.1

This is a big topic.

0:23.1

And it's something that I've been thinking a lot about. I read an article by Bioacomalafe in the New York Times recently about something along the lines

0:29.0

of like decenter, decentering modern psychology from the cultural narrative. And there's also a

0:35.9

great podcast that the Emerald did with him that I think was really

0:39.5

interesting on this topic. But I'm going to take a little bit of a different angle. I'm going to be

0:44.1

talking about how the modern psychological terminology becoming a sort of center point within our

0:51.5

culture is actually creating more separation and segregation

0:55.9

amongst couples and in dating and within our cultural narratives, within our political

1:02.0

narratives, within the education system. So we're going to do a little bit of a deep dive.

1:07.5

There's more to this conversation that I'm not going to be including in this. This is just a sort of primer.

1:12.5

And I'd like to hear your thoughts on this.

1:14.6

So before we jump into it, as always, don't forget to subscribe to the channel,

1:19.0

wherever you are watching or listening.

1:21.3

And don't forget to man it forward and share this content with somebody that you know

1:25.1

will enjoy it.

1:26.5

So look, maybe it's just me,

1:28.7

but have you noticed that in almost every single conversation about relationships,

1:37.2

about politics, about education, about just modern social issues in today's world,

1:46.7

that mental health and psychology seems to be at the forefront of absolutely everything. And that psychological and therapeutic
