Summary

On the cross, Jesus Christ gave Christians a new attitude toward the world — one of mission and servanthood. How does the cross turn us into servants? This sermon will show us that 1) Jesus came to give his life as a ransom and 2) The cross creates a new purpose for us. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on March 20, 1994. Series: The Cross and Your Life. Scripture: Mark 10:35-45. 1:12.0	What do you want me to do for you, he asked?
1:16.0	They reply, let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.
1:21.0	You don't know what you're asking. Jesus said, can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with a baptism I am baptized with?
1:28.0	We can, they answered. Jesus said to them, you will drink the cup I drink and you will be baptized with a baptism I am baptized with.
1:35.0	But to sit at my right or my left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.
1:43.0	Then the ten heard about this, they were indignant with James and John and Jesus called them together and said, you know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lorded over them and their high officials exercised authority over them, not so with you.
1:57.0	Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.
2:05.0	For even the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life a ransom for many.
2:13.0	This is God's Word.
2:17.0	We've been looking for a number of weeks at the meaning of the cross and I must say to you that it would be better, though not necessary, it would be better for you to understand the message today if you'd been in on the other messages.
2:31.0	And here's why. Up to now we have been looking really at how the cross brings wave after wave of privileges into our lives.
2:42.0	We have looked at the fact that the cross and we won't recap this but just note them, the cross brings us freedom from the world.
