Summary

Jesus overturning the tables at the temple is the only recorded act of violence by Jesus we see in the Bible. To understand why, we have to answer two questions: 1) What does the temple mean? and 2) What does the cleansing of the temple mean? You see, in Matthew, Ann, Mark, and Luke, Jesus comes in to Jerusalem,

riding and being hailed as the King on Palm Sunday, which is one week before Easter.

But in every one of those gospels, we see that virtually immediately they all, you know,

write it up a little bit differently, but virtually immediately he goes to the temple.

Because you see on Palm Sunday, he's not just coming into Jerusalem as King.

He's coming to the temple as King. And what he does in the temple seems so odd and so strange.

Here you have gentle Jesus, meek and mild, whipping people, Matthew and Mark and John, they all put it.

If you read all of the gospel writers, every one of them talks about the cleansing of the temple.

If you put all of the accounts together, we get quite a bit of details. He made a whip out of chords.

He hit people. He threw over the money changers tables. He threw over the animal cellars tables.

He yelled, here he is, Jesus, you know, I am meek and lowly of heart, you know, come to me.

I'll ye who labor and are heavy laden. And here he is, terrible in his wrath, thunder in his voice,

fire in his eyes. The only recorded act of violence done by Jesus. Why?

How are he actually told you why? We're going to spend the rest of the time on hooking and non-packing it.

He didn't come to Jerusalem declared his King. He came, not just to Jerusalem declaring himself as King,

he came to the temple declaring himself as King. This is such a violent act. This is such a radical act.

The question that comes up right away is, what did it mean? And to answer that question,

we have to first ask ourselves, what does the temple mean? And then, what does the cleansing of the temple mean?
