It was a sunny day at Wanda Beach in Australia, just another sunny afternoon, when two teenage

girls snuck away from their brothers and sisters. They wandered towards the sparsely populated

hidden sand dunes. What they didn't know was that a predator was waiting, hidden in plain sight, watching every move.

What followed was a brutal attack that left the entire country asking, what had just happened,

and who could have done this?

Our case today begins at 2.30 in the afternoon on Tuesday, January the 12th, 1965.

It's a warm summer's afternoon because we're at Wanda Beach in Sydney and 17-year-old Peter Smith

is walking through the vast sand dunes. He has his two young nephews behind him and he's guiding them across the tricky

train. The sand dunes are quiet and pretty deserted that day. He and the boys wander across the

sand and then Peter suddenly notices something odd, lying ahead of them half buried and completely

still. From a distance, it looks almost like a shop mannequin.

And guys, we know it is never a mannequin.

But this is genuinely what Peter thought.

He stares at it, trying to kind of work it out.

Why is it there who left it?

But, of course, he can't make any sense of it. And so he

walks a little closer. And as he gets closer to it, he bends down and realizes this is the body

of what looks to be a female and probably a young teenager. This whole time, his two young

nephews are just a few steps behind him. so Peter calls back to them to just stay there and wait while he goes for help.
