Summary

In today's first reading from 2 Samuel we learn about God's dealings with David, the Israelite king who put himself on a path of sin that culminated in adultery and murder. David is forgiven but also cleansed, purified, and brought back to obedience to God precisely through the suffering unleashed by this double-sin. From David we learn how God's grace is always available, but it is never cheap.

Peace be with you. Friends, our first reading for this Sunday is from the wonderful second

0:43.8

book of Samuel. I had the privilege, as you might know, a couple of years ago to do some

0:48.0

serious research on two Samuel, because I wrote the commentary in the Brazos commentary

series. Anyway, it's a little plug for my book, I suppose. But I came to love this text,

0:59.2

and I think it really is one of the pivotal texts in the whole Bible. And the scene we

1:03.5

have today, which is the confrontation between the prophet Nathan and King David, is one

1:08.8

of the pivotal scenes in this pivotal book. And so we're on very holy ground, I think.

1:15.5

To get it now, we have to go back to the previous chapter, chapter 11, which sets up the

1:21.5

story to which this is kind of a climax today. Listen now how chapter 11 of two Samuel

1:27.2

begins. At the turn of the year when kings go out on campaign, David sent out Joab,

1:35.1

along with his officers and the army of Israel. David, however, remained in Jerusalem.

1:40.8

Well, see, in the typical Lachonic biblical way, there's an awful lot packed into that little

1:46.6

seemingly superficial statement. David was the great king of Israel, and man was he a fighter.

1:54.6

From the time he took on the giant Goliath through his campaigns under Saul, his struggle

again, Saul, etc, etc. His battles with the Philistines, David was always willing to fight.

2:08.3

So our first question is, at the time of the year when kings go out on campaign, why in the world
