Summary

John Stonestreet and Shane Morris discuss the vice-presidential debate, its tone, the issues addressed . . . and the fly. They also talk about the remarkable statement by Supreme Court Justices Alito and Thomas on how the Court's decision on same-sex marriage has damaged religious freedom. It's a problem, the justices say, "that only the Court can fix."

Also on today's episode: Netflix is indicted on child porn charges for "Cuties," and John and Shane's recommendations for the week: A new audio bible by actor David Suchet, and ... the Sabbath rest.

Welcome to Breakpoint this week. I'm Shane Morris, and I'm here with John Stone Street to talk about the stories of the week from a Christian worldview perspective. Follow the stories we're talking about at

and think like a Christian in today's culture. And John, I think it's kind of up in the air now after

0:32.7

the single vice presidential debate. Whether there will be any more presidential debates, they're kind of

0:38.2

wrangling over whether there's going to be an online debate or another in-person debate.

0:42.6

But if there is another in-person debate, I really hope that unexpected insects are involved

0:48.9

in this one as well, because you were tweeting about one that made an appearance in the

0:53.4

vice presidential debate. I did not

0:54.8

catch it. I went and watched the highlights afterwards. But everyone seemed to be talking about the fly.

0:59.2

The fly was the star of the debate. It was amazing. I think NPR had the best headline. They said

1:04.3

the fly causes unexpected buzz. Yeah, there was a lot of those really bad puns. Mine was the stage is bugged. You know, it was just really something. I did think that there was a real failure of the moderator not to pull out one of those really cool salt shooter. Fly killers. I always wanted one of those things. Oh, man, I just saw one the other day in one of the cool, like, farm stores here that I love. I love going in there and

1:27.6

pretending like I live and, you know, on a farm somewhere. And it had one. I almost bought it

1:32.5

and it was so cool. But I mean, wouldn't it be great if the moderator had pulled it out and just,

1:37.4

you know. Just blasted Mike Pence's hair and gotten rid of the fly. I tweeted something about it.

1:42.6

And Pastor J.D. Greer from Summit Church and Raleigh responded. You know, I couldn't concentrate, you know, for somebody else

1:49.9

was like, did you, you noticed it too? I'm like, noticed it. I literally could not see or hear anything

1:55.2

else when that fly was just stuck there for a really long time. Doesn't that say something about this year's political process, though?

2:04.2

The fact that we're so hungry for distraction that we'll jump after something so trivial

2:08.4

and stupid in the debate.

2:10.0

You know, this debate, John, I have to say, the comment I saw most often after the fly
