Father Richard DeSosa took over as director of the Vatican Observatory in September 2025,

with Pope Leo the 14th making the appointment.

His path to the position started in a way most scientists never experienced.

He was born in Puna, India, in 1978,

joined the Society of Jesus in 1996, and became a Jesuit priest in 2011. Between his
