he is credited with inspiring Arthur Conan Doyle to write The Hound of the Baskervilles.

I stood with my back to the fire, smoking and puzzling over it.

It was worth all the headlines the newspapers had given it. There was no

loophole to the mystery. Both sides of the Atlantic new Silas J. Ford. He had established a business

reputation in America that had made him a celebrity in England from the day he stepped off the liner.

Once in London, his syndicates and companies and consolidations had startled the slow-moving

British mind. The commercial sky of the United Kingdom was overshadowed by him and his schemes.
