Summary

As parents, we know it's good for our kids to spend time outside, but often it's not on the top of the priority list and consequently may not happen as often as it should. What if I told you it has the potential to transform your family life and your homeschooling? Actually, make it easier? Today I am chatting with Ginny Yurich, founder of 1,000 hours outside!  She shares some incredible benefits to being outside, but more than anything she affirms what every mom knows...our kids NEED to be outside. This isn't something we add to our checklist, but something that is essential for children's healthy development. Ginny has a BS in Mathematics and a Master Degree in Education and was an educator for several years. Most importantly, she is now a mom of 5 children and shares from a wealth of knowledge and experience. Books mentioned: The Marvelous Pigness of Pigs by Joel Salatin Balanced and Barefoot by Angela Hanscom The Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv John Taylor Gatto on raising a genius: "Front-load a huge amount of experiences including 'dangerous' ones"! To find places to spend time outdoors: check city and county websites, search for parks, etc on Google Maps Ways to connect with Ginny: www.1000hoursoutside.com Facebook.com/1000hoursoutside Instagram.com/1000hoursoutside #1000hoursoutside (over 20k uses)   Ginny's Children's Book: The Little Farmhouse in West Virginia Homeschool blog: www.curriculumoffamily.com

Hey everyone. Welcome to the Dorenda Wilson podcast. I'm Durenda, wife to one, mom to eight,

unhurried homeschooler, a simple, mercifully short book on homeschooling, and Unhurried Grace for a

0:28.8

mom's Heart, which is a devotional made just, written just for moms. I am so excited today.

I have a very special guest who I'm going to introduce in

0:38.9

just a minute but we're going to be talking today about the topic of getting our

0:42.9

kids outside and there can be some challenges that come with that but I think

0:46.9

you're going to be really encouraged to do just that to make this more of a

0:52.3

priority for lots of really good reasons that you're going

0:54.8

to hear today.

0:56.0

But over our many years of raising kids, we have felt like being outside was super important.

1:03.3

Some of it probably stem from the fact that five of those eight kids were boys with lots

1:08.7

of energy to burn and a mom who wanted them to be able to be boys

1:12.4

and to be rowdy when necessary but who also couldn't handle all that in the house. So that was

1:20.4

one of the motivating factors in getting our kids outside. I also wanted to teach our kids

1:25.8

that was absolutely fine to be restless and loud and to

1:28.5

spa and wrestle with each other, but that most of the time was best if it happened outside.

1:34.0

So there was a teaching of manners and what's appropriate inside and outside that came along

1:39.5

with this, which was actually really helpful when we went to other people's houses because they knew wrestling inside was not okay.

1:47.6

But back to our topic, I shared an image the other day that really resonated with what we're going to be talking about.

1:54.9

It said this, encouraging a child to go outside in all weather builds resilience.

1:59.8

But more importantly, it saves them from spending
