Summary

New York City in 2025 is a paradox. On one hand, the city is seeing murders and shootings fall to near-historic lows. On the other, major felonies are still well above pre-pandemic levels, and for many New Yorkers, the city just doesn't feel as safe. This is the complex reality facing Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, who won a surprise victory on a democratic-socialist platform focused on affordability and a new approach to public safety. And his response is one of the most ambitious public safety experiments in American history.

retired NYPD, Sergeant Bill Cannon, a 27-year veteran of the NYPD. You know, we've been examining

some of the new policies that have yet to be put into action,

but are the planned policies of Mayor-elect Mamdami,

Some of these policies are quite controversial, and some of these policies don't, in my opinion, leave the civilian population safe.

And some of these policies include using civilians to, in the place of police, to respond to many different types of jobs.

For example, emotionally disturbed persons, which is one of the most dangerous jobs that the police respond to.

You never know if this person is violent or will get violent when confronted by another

And the police are trained to deal with that.

And just very recently, there was an indication or there was a job on the Upper East side where an individual was acting quite erratically and he was confronted by police officers. And as a result, the police officers from the 19th precinct had to use deadly physical force
