Summary

Jill Dando was one of the most high profile personalities in England in 1999. She had been named BBC Personality of the Year and her career as a journalist was going from strength to strength. She was the host of ‘Crimewatch’ – a show similar to America’s Most Wanted, and she presented the television news daily.

Her personal life was also flourishing. She was engaged to Dr Alan Farthing (Queen Elizabeth’s personal doctor), and their wedding was set for later in 1999.

On April 26, 1999, Jill went to her house in Fulham, London. She was selling the property because she had moved in with Alan. She went to her own place sporadically to get mail. As she put her keys to the lock, a man ambushed Jill. He pressed a gun to her head and fired. Jill Dando was murdered in cold blood.

Now, almost 24 years later, Jill’s murder remains unsolved. A man named Barry George was arrested for the crime and was later acquitted. Was Barry really responsible? Could her murder have been the result of a jilted lover? Was Jill murdered as retribution for her role in Crimewatch? Or was she targeted for her journalistic involvement in the Kosovo War?

In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss the unsolved murder of ‘Crimewatch’ host Jill Dando.

It's Thursday, March 16th. I guess we're recording this episode a little ahead of schedule because

0:36.7

more memories going to come out before this one and then this one's going to come out.

0:40.9

So just trying to get a little bit ahead.

0:43.7

But this is this is a super old case for once, not for once, but we usually do more current ones.

0:49.4

So I don't think there's going to be any changes. Well, you never know. No, we now lock

0:53.2

there might be an arrest because it is unsolved. So they could still be an arrest.

0:56.8

But maybe just our luck that happens around the time this episode comes out.

1:01.6

I would totally take credit. I always feel like, I don't know if it's just because of my

1:06.8

kind of interest is more so mainly about current cases. But when we do ask on the Instagram,

1:12.5

what kind of cases people want to hear about? You know, is it a cold case? Like, it's always a

1:16.0

pretty even split. So I feel like this is different to the cases we have recently covered,

1:21.1

but hopefully people will still be interested. And I feel like to a lot of Americans,

1:25.0

especially, may not be too familiar with it. So for many people, it may be a brand new case

1:29.7

that they're hearing about. I've honestly never heard of this one. Never heard of Jill Dandos.

1:35.1

Yeah. Well, it was actually suggested to us by laws who, yeah. So she suggested that we do it,

1:40.6

which I never hadn't really ever put it on the radar. But there is a Netflix series coming out

1:45.6

about Jill Dandos this year, I believe. So maybe good time in, you know, kind of this is an

1:51.0

introduction to her case. And I'm sure in this series, they'll do a massive deep dive on her

1:54.9

life, which will be interesting to see. Yeah, it's definitely an interesting case. It had me googling
