This is the Jocco Unraveling podcast episode 15 with Darrell Cooper and me, Jocco Willink.

So I spent my life obviously in the military, basically my entire adult life, all my formative

years were in the military and as part of being in the militaries that you are working

as a collective group.

So the US military is this thing that works together as a collective group which might

seem strange in the fact that one of America's fundamental principles is that of individual

freedom.

But here's where it kind of lines up better.

If you dig just a little bit deeper into the military and the way that the military operates,

that individual freedom is truly represented through a little thing called decentralized

command with decentralized command, everybody's a leader and that's what we want.

We want people thinking for themselves.

We want people to make decisions, want people to question and push back against authority

to avoid the sin of creativity and progress and that's the sin of groupthink.

I mean, you get a new groupthink scenario, no one's asking any questions, no one's

pushing back, there's just obedience.

And I know that sometimes people, most of the time people outside the military, sometimes

in the military, people think that what the military wants is soldiers that just obey,

just obey, just get in line.

And again, this is always surprising to say, or it surprises some people when I say it

doesn't surprise me to say it surprises some people when they hear it, that's the last

thing that I want.
