0:36.1	It was on summer vacation when I was a teenager. My family was staying in a
0:40.1	beach house near Hatteras on North Carolina's Outer Banks. I was sitting out on the deck one night,
0:45.3	looking out at the vast black expanse of the ocean and the impossible field of stars above.
0:50.8	Growing up under the dull orange glow of a suburban night sky, I so rarely got to see the stars like that.
0:57.3	And so I spent most nights out on the deck in a weathered Adirondack chair,
1:01.2	with my feet kicked up on the railing and my head tipped back, just marveling at the sheer number of stars.
1:07.8	On a clear enough night, you could see that the stars weren't just uniform white pinpricks
1:12.4	of light, but rather they sparkled like gems in every color of the rainbow. It was on one of those
1:18.4	nights that I saw it. At first, I thought it was a plane, but the clear, bright light high above me in the
1:24.3	sky was moving too fast. My brain reshuffled, trying to make sense of what I was
1:28.9	seeing. I knew there was an Air Force base nearby, and so that made sense. But then the light took a hard
1:35.4	90-degree left turn without slowing down, followed immediately by another equally impossible turn to the
1:41.7	right, before accelerating off past the horizon, streaking like a comet.
1:47.0	Electrified by what I had seen, I ran inside and told my family, but they didn't believe me.
1:52.4	I didn't talk about it again. I didn't see anything else on that trip or ever after in the years since.
1:58.6	I would sometimes think about that clear, bright light with a detached,
2:02.3	shapeless curiosity. But what do you do with an experience that you can't attach to anything solid,
