Would you like to know a secret? I have not yet decided what we're going to be talking about later in the program.

So if there is something that you think should be on my list, and let me give you some of the criteria,

which have to be met in order to be qualified as a phone-in topic. So it might be a very big news story,

but unless you can envision callers to the programme,

having something illuminating or interesting to say,

then it doesn't actually translate that the bigger the story,

the more obvious a phone-in topic it is.

So it has to be something that might prompt interesting calls

from interesting callers.

I think you'll allow me to

suggest we're generally rather good at fulfilling that requirement. And it has to have a relevance

beyond your world, your life. It has to be something that, although of enormous interest to you,

will also be of enormous interest to other people. And the bit I can't really expect you to do, because this is why they pay me the silly money,

is getting the question bang on.

So it might be an interesting story.

It might even be an interesting topic, and it might well prompt interesting calls and callers.

But unless you get the question bang on, except on the days where I deliberately don't ask any question at all,

and just throw open

the phone lines in order to see who's going to bite, apart from on those days, unless you get

the question absolutely bang on, then things don't go as well as they otherwise might. So do
