Today's story, Two Cartridges,

We did an earlier story of his called The Girl Who Got Raddled, and that remains as one of our

top tier of Listen to Short Stories.

For those of you who remember it, the short, soft-spoken trail boss who was the hero of that story was named Alfred, and he appears again in this story.

He was the kind of Westerner who might not have looked apart, but when the chips were flying,

he knew how to handle himself. White's books and short stories were popular at a time when America was losing

its vanishing wilderness. And he wrote his stories using his own experience and knowledge gained from

interviews with old-timers who were glad to share stories and details of survival in the West.

One footnote, Theodore Roosevelt wrote that White was the best man with both pistol and rifle who ever shot at Roosevelt's rifle range at Sagamore Hill.

And by the way, if you're ever on Long Island, give Sagamore Hill a visit. It's well worth the trip.
